Live lodge - Bermondsey

Sunday, August 29th, 2010

Brothers Typewriter, Buffalo asnd Sewing Machine took up residence in Rogue Studio 2 (great venue!). We took 2 guitars, a bass, electronic drum kit, and a range of synths (inc Evolver, Prophet, Nova) and of course harmonica and melodica. We recorded 20 odd tracks (some ran into each other - yes one conurbation of songs is 35mins long!).

We swapped and changed - often mid song but certainly I felt some of the most energetic songs featured BSM - bass, BT - drums, BB - guitar.

We’ll all post our thoughts and feelings in due course. Listen and try to enjoy if you can.

Fairly typical session apart from the last one where I’ve tried my hand at a bit of Country - turned out nice I think. Anything going on next month?

Beck and friends

Check this out. It seems to me that Beck and some mates (devendra bernhart, Nigel Godrich, Jeff Tweedy etc) do an ICS-ish remake of a favourite album. I particularly liked “That’s no way to say goodbye” and “Never tear us apart”

THANKS Burning Lodge

Monday, May 31st, 2010

Good news today. Found out that one of my Lodge songs, ‘Le Destin’ was a finalist in the UK Songwriting Contest. Doesn’t make a lot of difference to anything I guess,  but it’s nice to get some affirmation for something you like doing. So a big THANK YOU to all you Brothers and Sisters. If it wasn’t for Burning Lodge, I wouldn’t have written half the stuff I’ve written so far.

A month off

Tuesday, May 11th, 2010

Hey there fellow Burning Lodgers

I think I am gonna have to take a month out of ICS - my first gap in 12 months - as I just have too much else going down, what with graduating this weekend (Masters degree) and getting married next month. Come to think of it I probably won’t have time for an ICS session next month either.  All of which is a shame cos this last week in politics would be a great stimulus for an ICS ‘concept album in a day’ a la Brother Typewriter’s Economic-Collapse-themed session back in Autumn 2008.

I hope one of you out there gets to do a session this month - otherwise it will have been our first break in service since the inception of the Burning Lodge (I think).

Hope to catch up with you all soon

April listening session

Monday, April 12th, 2010

Hi allNote that we’re going for the 4th Saturday in the month (24th) for the April listening session as the 17th clashed with other events. I think it’ll be at Brother Buffalo’s place again.BT x

ICS game music

Sunday, April 11th, 2010

Hey brethren

I’m spreading the word about this game. BSM/plan-c did the audio design and music for this game. You may well recognise some of the tunes because all the music was written during ICS sessions. Check it out please!

Anybody manage to do anything this month?

Wednesday, March 17th, 2010

Hello all

,

Any of you fine people manage to do anything this month? I’m having a month off after mixing 45 songs in about 2 days for the Live Lodge. :-)

Just when you thought it was safe to switch on your mp3 player…

Guys

I have been massively enjoying the 52 tracks of the Live Lodge - in fact I have been listening to nothing else for the last couple of weeks. So many highlights I couldn’t possibly list them all - other than to say I think one of my favourite lyrics is “In your belly put some food … In your atti- put some -tude”.  But there are loads of great songs in there.

However - breaking news - because, as the Spice Girls almost said, tonight is the night when 52 become 60. Reason being, BSM has managed to locate his pocket digital recorder and hidden thereon were 8 more little gems, which I am in the process of uploading to the site.  I have numbered them 53 to 60, although chronologically this is wrong, as some of these were actually the very first things to be recorded on the day.

So enjoy everyone.

Live Lodge: From the main desk, Volume 1

Saturday, February 27th, 2010

Hello punters

Pleased to say that I’ve finally found time to start mixing down the lodge sessions. I was very pleasantly surprised - a lot of it sounds great IMHO.

Sorry about poor sound on “Your Face” - badly seated soundcard, I think. A reboot solved it but there’s fuzz all over this one track and it’s not intentional…

Because in most cases all the vocal mics were going into one track (due to lack of inputs on my soundcard) I was in many cases faced with huge differences in levels between lead and backing vocals (e.g. on “Green Vinyl Shores” and others). The only way of saving the backing vox in any form was to apply ridiculous amounts of compression to the vocal track (e.g. threshold at -40dB or lower!) which had the interesting side effect of bringing up the ambient sound of the rehearsal room - made the drums sound great, for example. I also fiddled around with a few effects - particularly amusing results on at least one occasion.

Hope you enjoy these. This is only maybe 30% of the session - plenty more where these came from (over the next few days).
